Fountain Valley became a city in 1957 through planned residential and commercial development that accelerated in the 1960s.
The area known as Fountain Valley was originally settled as an agricultural community called Talbert in the 1890s. After incorporation in 1957, the city experienced rapid planned development: the population grew from 2,068 in 1960 to over 31,000 by 1970, driven by construction of organized housing tracts and commercial districts. The city's name comes from the high water table and numerous artesian wells that distinguished the area's geography.
Mile Square Regional Park, a 640-acre facility operated by Orange County Parks, anchors the city's planned recreational infrastructure. The park includes two lakes, two 18-hole golf courses, play fields, and a 55-acre recreation center featuring tennis, basketball, and racquetball courts. This concentration of amenities reflects intentional community design that linked residential neighborhoods with shared recreational spaces.
